 | | | | Customer Reviews: Average Rating: Rating : - Great function and finish! This small system sounds BIG and works perfectly! I have to admit that the lack of reviews on this micro system by Emerson, made my purchase decision seem somewhat risky. The few reviews that I've seen imply that there were major problems with the CD functionality when it hit the market. Additionally, you don't see Emerson sold widely...although the product line has been around for years.
I decided to purchase the ES299 Micro System based on the product's multimedia capabilities. I especially wanted a unit that would accept Secure Digital and flash drive media, SD and MP3 CDs. The fact that this unit displays MP3 id3 tag information in the display was a HUGE bonus.
The system arrived...freezing cold, on January 18, 2008. I was concerned about causing some thermal shock to the circuitry, so I let the unit warm to room temperature before plugging it in. I think that was a good idea.
Filled with apprehension, I switch on and did some testing of the remote control and multimedia features.
- The unit lit up just fine and the remote functioned perfectly. - The powered CD drawer worked smoothly and both an audio CD and an MP3 CD worked without incident. The sound was GREAT from both sources. - The 2GB SD card (not SDHC!) and the 2GB flash drive plugged in and displayed the track titles, artists and album information in the blue back-lit LCD display...perfect! The track folder organization, track search, randomization, and various other track manipulation functions worked without a hitch. - The sound quality of this unit is very, very good...considering the type and size of the speakers. I wasn't able to get them to distort...even at a very high volume. No buzzing, hissing or 60-cycle hum. This thing really does sound nice!
Pros:
- The Emerson system performed exactly as advertised. - The unit seems well constructed and it is visually appealing. - The playback of audio CD and MP3 tracks work as expected. - The user manual is complete and is in REAL ENGLISH...not a hacked translation. - The AM/FM reception seems to get a stable lock on stations. I didn't notice any drifting or crosstalk from neighboring channels. - All of the buttons on the face of the base unit are duplicated on the remote. - Aux-in and Aux-out is supported via RCA connectors on the rear. - A 1/8-inch headphone jack is available on the front panel. - Navigation through the system functions requires some initial familiarization, but seems logical and concise after some practice. - The sound shaping/equalizer functions are adequate to handle typical music styles. Notably, I got good bass response with "DBBS" turned on. A pleasant surprise that I hadn't expected from the compact speakers.
Cons:
- The remote buttons are small and crowded. You'll have a hard time managing the remote in low-light situations. - A coin-sized lithium battery is used in the remote. I much prefer AAA batteries because they are inexpensive and could be replaced with rechargeables. - Some dual-function buttons on the remote are a little obscure. Read the manual initially and you should do alright.
Summary: For the price, this audio package will surprise and delight you. It's unfortunate that some folks had troubles with their units early on. So far, my experience has been totally positive.
